Integrative Seminar, Week 9 – 5th March, 2020, Thursday.

(Ms. Kanika Sharma)

The class started with everyone identifying the design elements from the book Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino.

We were told to write down one object each for each discipline from the museum visit. Had a discussion about that as well.

Later, we got introduced to the next assignment called – Parts of the whole.
Ma’am gave us some time to write down everything that we think comes under the 2 disciples we opted for our elective class.
For me it was Communication Design and Interior Design.
For communication I wrote several things like – Logo designing, knowing your client, magazine/brochures/ etc designing, test printing, sketching, typefaces, etc. The list went on and on.
For interior – It’s about inhabiting a space, how it makes you feel, where the attention goes, prototyping, mapping, blueprints of the space, etc.
On the basis of this information, studio class was going to be held.

What is Design to me?
I think design to me is problem solving in a unique and creative way. But that’s not entirely what it is. It is also a mode of expressing something without actually having to say it. It’s a way of communicating. I think literally everything has design in it. We are always surrounded by it, whether it is man made or natural.

I learned some interesting and new terms today as well – Disciplinary, Multidisciplinary, Trans disciplinary and Inter disciplinary.
Meanings, Disciplinary – Students learn concepts and skills differently

Multi disciplinary – Students learn concepts and skills separately in each discipline, but in reference to a common theme.

Inter Disciplinary – Students learn concepts and skills from two or more disciplines that are tightly linked together so as to deepen the knowledge and skills.

Multi disciplinary – Students, here apply knowledge or skills acquired from two or more disciplines and help in shaping the learning experience by undertaking real world problems or projects.
