History as Objects, Week 12 -23rd March, 2020, Monday.

(Ms. Malvika Mahidhar)

We studied about Chola Iconography. And ma’am mentioned about a few important temples.
The imperial of Chola of south of India were one of the grandest empire in the history of India. Their reign spanning from mid 8th century to mid 12th century CE,

The Brihadeeshwara Temple, Thanjavur.

The temple was originally called Rajarajeshwara temple after it’s owner, it came to be known as Brihadeeshwara. The temple was completed in the year 1009 CE.

We discussed various statues and compared them from one another.
I learnt something I did not know all this time which is that Durga and Parvati are the same just different name because different different avatars.

Parvati is a Passive goddess and Durga is an active Shakti goddess. According to Shaktism Durga is also the mother of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. Therefore, Parvati and Durga are not one and the same goddess. Their nature is totally different.” – some new information I found later.

Now why did Parvati became Durga?
“Goddess Parvathi took the fierce form Durga. To Kill the demon Mahisasura Because he got a boon that he could only be killed by women. Goddess Durga is created with the combined energy of trinities- lord Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva and other gods. … It is said that Durga was created by other gods.”

Pretty interesting things I had no idea about.
